Bleep

Gamified re-integration app

Former detainees

Type

Online Application, Gamification

Year

2021-ongoing

A substantial proportion of former detainees struggle to reintegrate into society, often returning to their previous behaviors and ending up in jail again.

Re-integrating in society is difficult and frustrating for former detainees. The Bleep app helps them to achieve their goals.

To design this gamified app, we visited several prisons and interviewed detainees to get to know the target audience: (former) detainees that want to re-integrate in society. They have important but complex goals ahead of them and most detainees are overwhelmed by it.

Therefore, we designed the Bleep app that helps to define their dream goals and breaks each goal into manageable steps.

After designing wireframes (see below) and testing, we made the visual design. The goal was to keep it minimalistic and easy to understand, even for detainees with lower cognitive abilities. The app is mildly gamified with a lot of autonomy and visual progress.

Visual Design

When designing complex applications it always helps to start with sketching out the basic structure. We never skip the wireframing stage. We turned the wireframes into an interactive prototype and tested it with detainees in the Netherlands. They liked it, the client liked it, thus we liked it too :).

It is very, very clear and straightforward. Large icons and buttons, not too much reading.
